Rose writes, The offset thing hands do in America, she had said, is cut their beards and the first thing the women do is to leave off their wigs (Cohen 79).She explains that the grooming of Jewish men and women was mandatory, because they had to adapt to the American way. Jews chose to conform in hopes of finding the high-paying jobs and avoiding harsh treatment. In the work force, many Jews we re also Americanized through the changing and altering of their Yiddish names. By making their names more American, they were more comprehensible for American people. When Ruth first got her job, her bosss wife asked Ruths father, Well Mr. , have you given your daughter an American name? How would you manage Ruth for a name? I said I should like to be called Ruth (Cohen 82). Even though many Jews were adapting to the American ways and becoming Americanized, in many places, Jews were highly discriminated against and treated with great disrespect. Many were physically and verbally abused, making life in America nevertheless more nerve-racking for incoming Jews. Rose Cohen experienced this treatment on a daily basis in the lower eastside, I had often seen these loafers, as we called them, attack a Jewish pedlar, dump his push cart of apples into the gutter, fill their pockets and walk away laughing and eating (Cohen 104).Rose describes the different social conditions that Jews face d when immigrating to America. He said he had escaped from the Russian army a year before and that his wife and two year old little girl were good-tempered in R ussia. He was trying to save and send for them (Cohen 120).Although many Jewish people were very hardworking, there was still no job security. Jews like Rose Cohen were jumping from job to job, not knowing what the next day had in store for them. Many Jews stayed without jobs for some months at a time. Cohen recalls, I stood a while, then I walked away from the shop, Where next, I wondered (Cohen 132). When Jews were able to secure jobs, they faced problems such as twelve-hour workdays. This meant that their lives consisted of nothing but work, eat, and sleep, which was repeated all seven days of the week. The days were long and the working conditions were harsh. Often, Jews had to attend work deathly ill or unable to physically function. Cohen recalls when she first arrived how much her father had to work and how he was hardly ever home, working to establish himself and his family in America. When he went away in the morning it was still dark, and when he came home at night the ligh ts in the halls were out (Cohen, Pg. 74). Oral or written argument Essay Example for Free
Oral or written argument EssayGiven that the ideas post not be truly and completely explained by words, one have to recognize that every oral or written argument ever told or explained is inherently subjective. Therefore, every fact described by a human is an opinion, and every opinion is somehow a fact. Thusly, every word should be considered from cardinal points of view from the point of view of fact and from the point of view of opinion. This relates to the testimony before the court as well. Every judge should realize, that even the most just person can interpret the facts wrongfully or simply mistake. Moreover, even the judge himself is not free from subjectivity, although the level of objectivity is one of the key factors find his or her professionalism. Therefore, upon examination of the testimony, a judge has to consider it as one fact and witnesses probable level of subjectivity as an new(prenominal) fact. At that it would be useful to classify the questions put befo re a witness during examination into two groups. Some of the questions are questions of fact (whats happened?), other questions are questions of opinion (do you cerebrate that? ). For sure, the second kind of questions includes a greater extent of subjectivity, although the first kind can not be recognized completely objective as well. In order to find out the truth, all the testimonies have to be reviewed in combination. Neither of the testimonies can be absolutely true and accurate. Only consideration of the testimonies and other proofs in the case would allow a judge to create a more or less straight story of the case. Question 2As a judge, I have to answer several questions in order to determine whether a person with multiple personality disorder should witness or not. Firstly, I have to find out whether a person can witness at all. In order to do that I would call the experts to assay that personss mental condition and his or her state at the moment. In case the experts recogn ize, that the person is principally able to provide a valid testimony, I would get along doubt his or her possible words and ask myself a second question how critical the persons testimony is for the case and how can it influence my view of the case.My ending can not be bases solely on the testimony of mentally infringed individual, yet his or her testimony may be usefull for clarification of some circumstances. I would rather rely on such witness to determine the facts, than in case I needed his or her opinion. In case I came to a conclusion, that I still need this witness, I would properly examine him or her in the presence of the experts who would observe the individuals behavior during examination and inform me of possible deviations.Having ideal the examination, I would consider how much do the words of the witness conform with other testimonies and proofs in the case. In case I would find no lawful controversions, I would consider the words of such witness as a valid testi mony. Yet I would keep in mind, that this testimony is provided by a doubdtful witness and critically evaluate this testimony.Works Citedhttp//www. boogieonline. com/seeking/know/meaning. html

Technically, oral presentation in any field consists of three mains part which is introduction, development of points, and conclusion. Introduction will always deal with preparation and planning on the topic being discussed. Development stage consists of climax of the presentation, where all the point demand to be focusing in an appropriate air. For last stage which is conclusion, it usually ends with the summary of the presentation, and principal session from the audition. However, all these three main parts does not work on its own. All the elements consume to be use and delivered by combination of skills, enthusiasm, efforts, and person involved. In academic purpose, oral presentation sh ould be easily organized, and the supporter chooses to have a deep knowledge about what they want to present. Presenter in addition should clear the purpose of the topic, and make authoritative that people rear end pull in on what is being delivered. Many speakers ar lack with the skills and confidence level to make an effective presentation. Feeling of stage f sound, speech anxiety, or talking fallacy is a common situation happened to the speakers especially for those who are not presenting regularly. In order to thrash the situation, all basic things in presentation in addition want to be care estim fittingy determined. The points like when is the presentation, how long, where is the place, what is the function, who is guest attend, and many more must be carried out before the presentation begins. All these crumb improve the gauge of the presentation.SPEAKING IN A FORMAL ACADEMIC CONTACTA good and effective presentation definitely depend on how well it being structured . creation in academic purpose is actually comparable as other presentation, but different in certain aspect. As be mentioned before, presentation hires to have three important parts which is beginning, the middle, and the end. Beginning process always starts with an appropriate greeting to the audition. Example of greeting good morning ladies and gentlemen, is one of the greeting always being said. Beginning process also includes introducing of the speakers, to introduce who are you, from where, and the purpose of the presentation. The greeting part can be applied individually time presentation, but if we are presenting to the same group of audience for many times, introducing part can be skipped.Currently, the most famous ways of presentation is by the aid of power point slide show. Thus it will be a good medium of deli truly so that all points can be pointed out clearly. In academic purpose, the slide show will begin in what are the topic will covered, the objective of the subject, and also the brief portray on what the presentation will talk about. This is to make an under stand among audience and could remember certain important info. Purpose should be divided by two, which are general purpose and the specific purpose. General purpose only gives the overview, to present, to summarize, and to discuss the current topic. For specific purpose is the points that we want the audience to take away with them after listening or attending the presentation, or in other word something that really important which needs to be remember.3.0 PREPARING AN ORAL PRESENTATIONIn order to have a good communication skills and effective oral presentation in academic purposes, there are some points that can be a guideline. The five key points of the successful oral presentation are as followKnow your audienceUse your utteranceBody languagePresentation aidsPractice what to be delivered.3.1 Know Your AudienceIn oral communication, the most important thing is we know who our audience is. By knowing the audience, we can know what is the suit adequate to(p) and reasonable points should be typeset in our presentation. Audience in oral presentation can be a public people, students, employees, or professional team. Thus, in order to prepare this presentation, we need to suite the audience and the content of the presentation. For example, if our audience is a group of secondary student, then we can perpetrate some interactive diagram or use simple example which can attract them to listen on the presentation. This is because this type of audience is usually tardily to get bored and lost their focus, which only stand for the first part of the presentation. But, if the audience is the professional group like teachers, lecturers, or government officers, the content of the presentation need to be more specific and details as they are the one who have an interest to the topic presented. The presentation need to be more academically, as they want to know details about the particular topic.Audience also consists of two types, which is active and passive audience. Active audience will always involve in the presentation, for example answering question that we ask and give their opinion or question in the middle of presentation. It will be lucky if we get active audience which makes the presentation more interesting and others will also get there information from the ask person. But in current situation for most cases of presentation, there will be hard to find audience in this type. For passive audience, they always keep silent although question or opinion being asked. However, we can change this passive audience to become an active audience. In handling passive audience, more attention need to be given, and if possible just pointed to someone and ask for their opinion about the topic being discussed. Another ways is by giving some rewards for those who standing and give their question or opinion. By this way, we encourage them be active and i nvolved in the presentation.Other than that, we also need to know what the level of knowledge of the audience is. If we are presenting in front of people who are new in the topic, then the presentation needs to be more basic and a bit details. However, if the level of knowledge of the audience is the same or higher, then the presentation needs to be more complete and consecutive to the point. Thus, to know the audience before the presentation is one of the requirement and necessary. It will help a lot especially in the preparation of material for presentation to the target group. The presentation will be more effective and what we want to deliver can be presented in the most convenience way.3.2 Use Your VoiceIn presentation, voice is the medium of communication between speaker and the audience. A good voice in presentation will have a variable chanting in their ways of deliin truth. Intonation will reflect on the points that being stress out. A loud intonation can be used in stressi ng on important points and fact, which is things that audience need to be carefully listen and understand. By saying loudly the points, it will attract audience and they will focus on the speakers words.Soft intonation then can be used for the points that are general, or less important. By applying soft intonation, calm condition can be created and this will give some opportunity to the audience in controlling their focus. Speaker also must know to control their voice, and make authoritative plane voice is not being used. While saying something important points, it is also encourage to stop talking for a seconds after the points. This is to create a situation to show that point stated are really important and the speaker show that by silence. However, there are a lot of technique of intonation can be used in order to catch attention, but for an academic purposes, right intonation must be correctly use to retard lost focus by the audience.3.3 Body LanguageOther than a good setup of content and voice tone, body language also plays an important role to the audience. It can communicate and deliver an important message between people which cannot be reached by other method. Body language can be seen in some ways which isFacial verbal expressionBody postureBody gestureEye contactFacial expression are varies fit to the content of the talk. For academic purpose of presentation, the common expression by the speaker is serious expression. Actually, academic purpose is not always dealing with serious and straight expression. A good speaker knows when to apply several of facial expression in order to stress out the point. Expression like smiling, thinking, and confuse expression can create a good psychological effect to the audience.Eye contact to the audience also needs to be controlled. Speaker need to expression at the audience from time to time and not looking at the presentation slide or notes in the hand. Any notes or book can be place on the table and can be u se as reference, but not for most time. It is not allowed to speaker holding the notes as it shows that speaker are not ready or not sure on what being presented. It is really advisable to the speaker to move around in some radius in the stage. Speaker can move from one side to another slowly in between deliver one points to another. This is to evidence some changes on focus, and keep attention. The transition also can emphasize some points and to clear some points.Body language also is useful to overcome nervousness. While put some expression, we will not feel stress and just do like a normal speaking. In addition, body language can maintain the interest of audience, as they will see variable action and keep focusing. Body language should be natural and friendly, not feigning or force. Body posture can be setup to straight but relaxed, not too technical. Pointing by hand or arrow can be used to indicate part of explanation, in the diagram or table.Negative body language should b e prevented. Action like yawning and proclivity will indicate speaker is boring. Standing with hands on hips, or arm folded is defensive action and make the presentation not in the right pathway. Other than that, looking at the notes, keep looking at the screen, albumin panel, or floor are also need to be turn awayed. Speaker also needs to remember to not back turned to the audience, or put a hand in the pocket. Some speaker or presenter also sometimes likes to sway like a pendulum, which is a bad habit. It becomes an annoying action to the audience.3.4 Presentation AidsIn oral presentation the delivery of our appraisal is one of the most important criteria during the presentation. This is because we want to make sure the audience gets what we want to say and get the basic concepts of our presentation. Next visual aid also saves time this is because with the visual aid we are able to enforce fine art during the presentation. Thus this will reduce the time needed for the explanation for the certain points during the oral presentation. This will also reduce the usage of the white board and information to be put on a board. Different types of visual that can be used to convey our ideas are the graphs, maps charts, drawings, images and objects. The pointer also will reduce the movement of the presenter and this makes sure the presenter can present well the presentation. Thus this will also ensure they will not waste energy on walking and can make sure the presenter is comfortable during the presentation period. Apart from that this will reduce the presentation during.3.5 Practice Points to be Delivered.Practice makes perfect. That phrase should be used in order to have a perfect presentation. For those who are use to give a speech will do not ha ve a problem, but people who are going to present for the first time need to make a lot. In the presentation, we need to organize and practice especially time frame, fluency of speaking English, any aids to be used, and expected question on particular topic that may be asked.Practicing in front of the mirror or friends can manage to handle with the time frame. Time management is very important in order to deliver points and know where to give more explanation. Practicing also could increase self confidence level as we are ready on the condition and for the whole presentation.Fluency in English also needs to be alert. There are some words which have difficulties to pronouns, and cant must be us in limited. This is because some audience will not familiar with the jargon being use, unless the jargon is commonly use and we super confidence audience understand the phrase or jargon that we use.Question and ask session also need to be practice. The expected question need to be focus on as speaker will dont have any difficulties to answer in the real situation. Some question also need to be asked to the audience to know level of understanding on the topic presented. But do not force audience to give an answer. If possible, find any volunteer to answer the question, and this will create more convenience ways in this session. In explaining some points, rhetorical question can be asked. empty talk question is the question being asked without expecting it to be answer. For example, Have you ever heard about, or What does this phenomena imply to us... These questions are asked just to show the problem and need self interpretation about the question.4.0 CONCLUSIONAs a conclusion, making an effective oral presentation in English in academic context is not something that too heavy to done. By combining all the factors and points given, a successful presentation can be made. What needs to be focus on is the choice of topic, the way of the presentation, skills in presentin g, and the content of the presentation. All this may required certain period to prepare and practice, but as efforts be given in the presentation, there will be easy on the real situation and condition.A good presentation should consist of story line, which determined what should be put in introduction, problem definition, an approach to the problem, findings of the solution, and also recommendation or suggestion to the particular topic. In addition, storyboard also could be used as it consist the same things as storyline, but all points are under the same theme.Presentation in English must be always implemented in the daily life, not only for academic purposes, but also for the other context. Reflection on Situated Knowledge Map
Reflection on Situated Knowledge MapFor the Situated Knowledge Map, I created volt pins titled Hairy Legs, Get On The Scale, Talk To Your Sister, Crazy Feminist, and No under the pseudonym BS. These pins focus on body human body, fatphobia, the feminist killjoy, and racism. In this reflection, I will examine how these moments in my life channelized my perspective then reflect on the system and other posts I read while placing my own pins. spell I nominate the assignment slightly difficult due to the nature of the content, I believe the analysis ca economic consumptiond by the assignment is valuable and I found the system utilized simple scarce possibly exclusive.Hairy Legs, Get On The Scale, and Talk to Your Sister all focus on body image with the last two focusing specifically on fatphobia in our society. Hairy Legs discusses the first time I recognized gender performance and how it affects body hair for men and women. As a 3rd grader at the time, I did not understand why my hairy legs were a problem but the boys hairy legs were fine. nowadays I recognize hairlessness is a societal standard of gender performance for women. This was the first time I had a negative comment order towards my body and the first time I supposition of my body in term of good and bad. Get On The Scale and Talk to Your Sister be 2 events about a decade apart that made me realize how people treat my sister and I differently due to our weights. As a small girl and woman, my mother only mentioned my weight when she believed I might have an eating disorder. However, my mother started talking about weight with my sister much frequently when she began to gain weight even going as far as to try to commute me to talk to me sister about losing weight. After the events in Talk to Your Sister, I recognized it and the events of Get On The Scale as the double standards surrounding weight women face and the general fatphobia in our society. These events remind me of a quote from The Bod y Politic-Meditations on Identity by Elana Dykewomon Women in almost every society offer their daughters up to the prevailing cultural standards of beauty and avail for womenif women dont prepare their daughters to meet institutionalized male demands, they know their daughters will suffer in life (Dykewomon 453). I believe this accurately describes what my sister and I went finished in these events. The third post, Crazy Feminist, describes the beginning of how I came to understand my identity as a feminist and how grateful I am for taking that step. I had not thought of feminism or considered calling myself a feminist until I joined Women in Learning and Leadership (WILL). I had been discouraged from connecter and staying in the group during my first and second year of college. First from my friends sister commenting on how it is a crazy feminist group then with my parents continued attempts to convince me to drop the group and Women and Gender Studies minor for a more than usef ul math minor. It was these attempts and the influences of WILL the led me to my crazy feminist identity which has been more encouraging to me and given me more skills, in my opinion, than a math minor would have as a woman in science. The final post, No, is the story of the day I discovered my father holds racists beliefs. I was shocked when he came to me asking me to explain to my sister that she could not date an African American boy. This event did not change my view of racism so much as it made me realize how truly wide spread it is in my own life. It made me look more closely for subtle racism in my life as well.I found the system used for the Situated Knowledge Map simple to use overall. I believe it is important to create online tools that are easy to navigate if the group creating the tools want them to be accessible for everyone. In the article Invisible feminists? kindly media and young womens political participation, Julia Schuster argues that the use of social media a nd the internet by young feminists make them invisible to older feminists and the use of these tools leads to the exclusion of certain groups of feminists. This effect seems to be happening with this tool, as the clear majority of the pins I looked at were authored by apparent college students, and may be invisible to older feminist groups who are not using these forms of media. I also examined interesting perspectives from reading several of the pins on the map. One particular pin that made me examine my standpoint was Church a pin written from the perspective of a Methodist discussing the Catholic ceremony of Confirmation. This pin made me think about religious privilege from the perspective of a child not experiencing violent religious percussion but subtle religious exclusion. Before reading this pin, I had never considered how a child may feel excluded and othered by other childrens shared experiences from and dislike of their parents religion.I found this project to be slight ly difficult for me because I had to admit, not only to myself but to possible hundreds of people, that these experiences affected my behavior, particularly in Hairy Legs, and that my family holds these beliefs. However, I also think it is important that I analyze these events that have clearly shaped who I am today. In regards to the system used for this project, I found it simple to use however, I am an individual who has had the privilege of growing up adjoin by this technology. People and groups who do not have this privilege may be excluded from using these tools. In addition, reading the perspective of previous posters led me to thought processes I would not have if I had not read their experiences.Work CitedDykewomon, Elana. Native American and The US government Essay -- essays papers
Native American and The US governmentThe Iroquois Nation was a nation of five tribes, which was comprised of Mohawks, Senecas, Oneidas, Cayugas, and Onondagas. These tribes were originally separated, simply later brought unneurotic by two Indians named Hiawatha and Deganawidah. Hiawatha seemed to be the spokesman man Deganawidah took on the role as a philosopher. These two men formed a nation where some of the ideas argon still intact today. One aspect that made them so strong was the way in which they governed themselves. Women in their society were basically in charge, except for the Sachems who were representatives nominate by the heads of the Ohwachiras. When this federal assembly met, the Sachems voted as tribes instead as individuals. This in many ways can be compared to present day government electoral votes.Another aspect I found that created a strong unity was the arrangement of power, which was demonstrated in their seating arrangement. The Mohawks and Senecas sa t on one side, while the Oneidas and Cayugas on the other. The two tribes were separated with the Onondagas sitting between them. This arrangement was a lot like present days balance of power in the three different branches of the Federal Government. The government of the Iroquois Nation has set themselves apart from almost all other Indians of North America and made it a right force in denouncing the Indians as being savages. Todays Native American has adopted many of the ideas of the Iroquois Nation. Native American history is handed set ashore amongst the tribes through spoken language and rituals. Native American religion is centered on the idea that every day items as well as the disposition surrounding them can possess spirit. Euro-Christians panoramas are more anonymous as to religion and more scientific concerning their history. Native Americans view of history contains many inconclusive facts when looked at from a European point of view. When you consider th eir lack of a written language, there are many instances where they do name specific places from which they originate. Unlike the Euro-Christians, these places the Native Americans speak of can be found today. In contrast, Euro-Christian religion/history speaks of the Garden of Eden, but with no specific location as to where the garden can be found. Native American history is interwoven with... ...for what they needed to exist, not to turn a profit and destroy nature (the wilderness).Native Americans thought of gifts as symbolic gestures of friendship and peace at first. They would look at all trade as an exchange of gifts. They would have feasts after trades with the French, for instance to bolster the moral and finalize a deal. Even when the stakes were high and the Europeans knew that it was a gift and not a trade, the natives thought it to be a gift. When the Europeans traded gifts to the Natives for land, the Natives assumed they were trading a gift for the use of land, n ot subtle that land can be owned. Land was a sacred thing to the Natives and I doubt they would have traded any of it, if they knew the implications of these gifts they were receiving (in trade). The Europeans on the other hand knew that the natives didnt know what some of these trades meant. A few Europeans tested to explain it to the natives, but to no avail. The Natives didnt understand to the Europeans delight. They used this against the Natives who couldnt have known the value of what they were giving up. The Europeans were at fault by knowing these trades to be absurd and unfair.

Thomas Hardys Views on Marriage Essay -- Biography Biographies Essays
Thomas Hardys Views on MarriageThomas Hardy lived in a duration when marriage was the expected practice for new-make men and women. He had a very distinct view of the institution and the implications that came along with it. He himself was married twice in his long life, both time not very happily, and had progressive views about the union of the sexes, most particularly regarding divorce. His ideas and opinions are not too carefully concealed in his literary works, though he contested that he kept his own views out of his fiction. In order to understand Hardy and his views on marriage, we must first understand the time in which he lived. The Victorian society held rigid views on marriage and the role of women in life. Most women regarded marriage as a fixed concomitant of nature. It was a fundamental part of their life plan, as was childbearing. In the mid-19th century, reproduction was considered a womans only correct occupation. On average, women of all classes married betwee n the ages of 23 and 26, men between 25 and 30. Marriage and divorce legislation regulated the relations between men and women. During the 19th century there were great changes made to matrimonial law however, marriage laws still continued to grant more rights to men than to women. Under the common-law doctrine of couverture, when a woman married she mixed-up her independent legal personality as a femme sole (single woman) and became a femme couvert (covered woman). Men could divorce their wives solely on the grounds of adultery, but women were forced to fork over proof of cruelty, bigamy, incest, or bestiality along with infidelity. Husbands could beat to death their wives and get only a minimal prison sentence, but wives were considered reprehensible for kill... ... should rule marriage. If dickens people have similar interests and work well together, they should be united by marriage in order to enjoy the physical pleasures of a human relationship in a socially acceptable wa y. However, if two people should grow apart and be utterly miserable with one another, Hardy believes that the practical manikin is separation and divorce. BibliographyChrist, Carol T., ed.
